A Dimensional Study of Disk Galaxies (an Excuse to Talk about the Hubble Sequence)
نویسنده
چکیده
We present a highly simplified model of the dynamical structure of a disk galaxy where only two parmeters fully determine the solution, mass and angular momentum. We show through simple physical scalings that once the mass has been fixed, the angular momentum parameter λ is expected to regulate such critical galactic disk properties as colour, thickness of the disk and disk to bulge ratio. It is hence expected to be the determinant physical ingeredient resulting in a given Hubble type. A simple analytic estimate of λ for an observed system is provided. An explicit comparison of the distribution of several galactic parameters against both Hubble type and λ is performed using observed galaxies. Both such distributions exhibit highly similar characteristics for all galactic properties studied, suggesting λ as a physically motivated classification parameter for disk galaxies.

Thick Disks of Lenticular Galaxies ⋆ 3 D - photometric thin / thick disk decomposition of eight edge - on S 0 galaxies
Thick disks are faint and extended stellar components found around several disk galaxies including our Milky Way. The Milky Way thick disk, the only one studied in detail, contains mostly old disk stars (≈ 10 Gyr), so that thick disks are likely to trace the early stages of disk evolution. Previous detections of thick disk stellar light in external galaxies have been originally made for early-t...
متن کاملObserving the Formation of the Hubble Sequence in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey
Understanding the physical formation of the Hubble sequence remains one of the most important unsolved astrophysical problems. Searches for proto-disks and proto-ellipticals can now be effectively done using deep wide-field Hubble Space Telescope images taken with the new Advanced Camera for Surveys. Through an analysis of the concentrations (C), asymmetries (A) and clumpiness values (S) (CAS) ...
متن کاملGalactic Bulges from Hubble Space Telescope Nicmos Observations: Global Scaling Relations
We investigate bulge and disk scaling relations using a volume-corrected sample of earlyto intermediate-type disk galaxies in which, importantly, the biasing flux from additional nuclear components on the inner bulge light-profile has been modeled and removed. Structural parameters are obtained from a seeing-convolved, bulge+disk+nuclear-component decomposition applied to NIR surface brightness...
متن کاملContribution of spiral arms to the surface brightness distribution of disk galaxies
The usual bulge/disk decomposition of the surface brightness distribution in disk galaxies generally gives good results for S0 galaxies, but often fails for more advanced types of the Hubble sequence. We propose in this paper that, in the case of spiral galaxies, a third component must be considered: the contribution of spiral arms. The functional form of the luminosity law of spiral arms is he...
متن کاملMagnetic Fields and Star Formation in Spiral Galaxies
The main observational results from radio continuum and polarization observations about the magnetic field strength and large-scale pattern for face-on and edge-on spiral galaxies are summarized and compared within our sample of galaxies of different morphological types, inclinations, and star formation rates (SFR). We found that galaxies with low SFR have higher thermal fractions/ smaller sync...
